At All Smiles Dental in Lexington, SC, we believe that great oral health starts at home. While regular dental checkups and professional cleanings are essential, what you do between visits makes a huge difference. Here are five simple, science-backed tips from our team to help you and your family maintain healthier, brighter smiles every day.
1. Floss First — Then Brush
Most people brush first and floss second — or skip flossing altogether. But Dr. Crocker actually recommends reversing that order: floss first, then brush. Here's why: flossing first loosens food particles and plaque from between your teeth and along the gumline. When you brush afterward, your toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste can sweep away that debris and reach between teeth more effectively. Studies have shown this sequence leads to greater plaque removal and higher fluoride concentration between teeth.
If traditional floss feels awkward, try floss picks, a water flosser, or interdental brushes. The best flossing tool is the one you'll actually use consistently. Aim to floss at least once a day — ideally before bedtime.
2. Brush for Two Full Minutes — Twice a Day
It sounds simple, but most people only brush for about 45 seconds. Two full minutes, twice a day, is the gold standard recommended by the American Dental Association. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and make sure to cover all surfaces — the front, back, and chewing surfaces of every tooth. Consider using an electric toothbrush, which studies show removes more plaque than manual brushing.
A helpful trick: use a timer or play a two-minute song to make sure you're brushing long enough. This is especially useful when brushing kids' teeth!
3. Watch What You Drink
Many of our Lexington patients are surprised to learn how much their beverages impact their dental health. Sugary drinks like sodas, sports drinks, and even fruit juices feed the bacteria in your mouth that produce enamel-eroding acid. Acidic drinks like coffee, wine, and citrus juices can also wear down enamel over time.
Our best advice: drink plenty of water throughout the day — especially fluoridated tap water, which helps strengthen tooth enamel. When you do enjoy sugary or acidic drinks, use a straw to minimize contact with your teeth, and rinse with water afterward. Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing, as enamel is temporarily softened by acid and brushing too soon can cause damage.
4. Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly
A worn-out toothbrush can't clean your teeth effectively. The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush — or the head of your electric toothbrush — every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. Frayed bristles are much less effective at removing plaque and can even irritate your gums.
Also remember to replace your toothbrush after you've been sick, as germs can linger in the bristles. Store your toothbrush upright and let it air dry between uses — avoid covering it with a cap, which can trap moisture and encourage bacterial growth.
5. Keep Your Regular Dental Appointments
Even with excellent home care, professional cleanings and exams are irreplaceable. Our hygienists can remove tartar (hardened plaque) that brushing and flossing simply can't address, and Dr. Crocker and Dr. Cookson can catch small issues — like early cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer — before they become big, expensive problems.
We recommend most patients visit us every six months. If you have a history of gum disease, dry mouth, or other risk factors, we may suggest more frequent visits. Early morning appointments are available Tuesday through Thursday to fit your busy schedule.
Your Smile Is Worth It
Good oral health is about much more than a great smile — it's connected to your overall health and wellbeing. Research has linked poor oral health to heart disease, diabetes, and other systemic conditions. Taking a few extra minutes each day to care for your teeth is one of the best investments you can make in your long-term health.
